How I hurt my knee this year
This is how: I did not run through the winter.
From December to March, I did not run. Then, when I started again, in preparation for spring races, I thought Let’s just pick up where I left off. A standard run I was doing in 2008 was to warm up with a nice half-mile jog and then run a 6 minute mile.
That was a bad idea. A winter off does not allow for such behavior. After a couple weeks of acting like I could still do this (and not being able to get under 6:45, much less 6), the knee started to complain intensely on some footplants. I took six weeks off to baby it, but by that time I’d missed the Brooklyn Half.
I feel like I’m getting back on track, and the Marathon seems like it will be okay. So I’m glad. But we have a moral to this story:
Run through the winter.
Funny I just said yesterday, I’m not running from November through February… Ok December, No January for sure. Maybe I’ll reconsider now.
